Turmeric is one of those ingredients in our kitchen that we are all familiar with. But do you know what turmeric does to our skin or how turmeric helps the skin? Turmeric plant comes from the ginger family. It is a flowering plant and the roots of these plants are used in cooking, medicinal purposes, and skincare. People have been using turmeric to get a glowing and bright skin tone and in various other skin care and medical purposes. There are different types of turmeric and they all have different properties. Since they all can affect different types of skin in different ways, it is important to know which turmeric is used for skin and also which turmeric is good for baby skin, cause when it is for the younger once, we have to be more careful. Below are some points on how turmeric effect on the skin:
Turmeric and Skin Glow
If you want beautiful glowing skin, turmeric is a very beneficial ingredient that can help you achieve that glow. Turmeric contains antioxidants that remove the damaged cells and can provide a healthy glow.
To use turmeric for glowing skin mix a cup of yogurt with 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and apply the paste to a clean face. Let the mask sit for 15 minutes and wash it off with water. For better results use this paste once every week or two.
Turmeric and Skin Allergy
Turmeric can work wonders for many skin allergies. For application, mix equal amounts of turmeric and honey and apply directly to the skin. You can also mix a ½ cup of turmeric with water and make a paste and apply directly onto the skin. Let these mask sit for 15-30 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water.
If the direct application of turmeric causes redness and irritation do not use it, instead you can consume turmeric milk. Add ½ teaspoon turmeric to a glass of milk and drink it. And for turmeric tea, add a ½ teaspoon of turmeric to water and boil it then add a ½ teaspoon of honey and drink it.
Turmeric for Acne Problem
Turmeric is an excellent use for treating acne. It is a natural anti-septic and has anti-bacterial properties. To apply mix 1 tsp of turmeric, 2 tablespoons of milk with few drops of honey. Apply this to the affected area and leave it for about 20-30 minutes and then rinse off with cold water. Apply until you get satisfying results. A light paste of this can be used with a ½ teaspoon of sandalwood powder on a regular basis once a week for preventing further infection and is also beneficial for oily skin.
Turmeric for Dark Circles
Turmeric is a powerful natural antioxidant which helps in skin lightening. For treating dark circles mix 1 tablespoon of turmeric with pineapple juice and apply under your eyes and leave for 10 minutes. Wash off with a cold soft cloth. You can also grate a cucumber and take out the juice and mix it with a generous amount of turmeric and make a paste. Apply and leave for 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off. Follow these processes for 3-4 times a week for good results.
Turmeric for Sun Damage and Aging
With an increase in global warming, sun damage is a major problem of many. Sun exposure for long hours can make the skin thick, change in pigmentation, spots and wrinkles and signs of aging. Some skin allergies and irritations are also caused by too much sun exposure.
For treating these issues, take a ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder, a ½ teaspoon of tomato (purred), 1 teaspoon of yogurt and make a paste. Apply this paste on the affected area or all over the face and neck and leave it for 30 minutes. Follow this process for 3 times every week for at least a month.
Turmeric and Stretch Marks
Stretch marks can also be treated with the help of turmeric. Turmeric improves the skin tone and even outs the marks. To apply turmeric for stretch marks mix turmeric powder with lemon juice and apply it to the affected area. Let the paste sit for 15 minutes and then rinse it off.
You can also mix turmeric powder with coconut oil. This forms a turmeric essential oil for which is good skin. Apply this onto the area and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing it off completely. This paste is very effective for pregnancy stretch marks. Start applying this mix and other natural ingredient based creams and oils when the stretch marks initially appear, this will help reduce the vividness of stretch marks.
Turmeric for Dry and Oily Skin
You must be thinking, is turmeric good for oily or dry skin? Turmeric is good for both oily and dry skin when mixed with different ingredients. For dry skin mix up 1 teaspoon of cream, a pinch of turmeric, 1 teaspoon sandalwood, 2 teaspoons of gram flour. You can also add olive oil or coconut oil if you have very dry skin. Make a paste and apply all over your face and neck. Leave this mask for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. Use 2-3 times a week. For oily skin mix 2 teaspoons of yogurt, turmeric powder, rose water and sandalwood powder (optional). Make a paste and apply all over your face. Leave it for 15 minutes and rinse it off with cold water. Use this mask once a week.
Turmeric and Skin Rashes
Turmeric can work as a good ointment for rashes. Mix turmeric powder with olive oil and apply it on the affected area twice or thrice a day. Follow this process for a few days until you achieve satisfying results. Turmeric has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory components that fight bacteria. It also smoothes out skin and reliefs from itching. You can also apply ice over the affected area and tap it dry before applying the turmeric oil to cool down the infected area.
Applying turmeric directly to skin might cause irritation for some people. In that case, applying turmeric juice, turmeric tea or turmeric water can be very beneficial. There are different types of turmerics and all might not work the same for your skin type. Kasturi turmeric is known to be the best turmeric when it comes to skincare. However, this turmeric is best used with milk or yogurt rather than plain water.
