We have been witnessing one of the worst pandemic diseases in the name of coronavirus. But one more old disease has made a destructive entry in such dark times and it is the so-called Hantavirus. Yeah, you must be thinking it is a newly emerging virus. But the fact is that it has already caused havoc in the past and is back again. We have posted a lot of information about Hantavirus and it’s symptoms. To know about that click here. In this article, we are going to discuss the causes of Hantavirus.
The main cause of Hantavirus is said to be a few species of rats and mice. Well, Hantavirus causes mainly two types of diseases. One which caused Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in the Americas is known as ‘New World Hantavirus’. On the other hand, Hantavirus was responsible for Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in Korea, Sout-East Asia, and Southern Europe is known as ‘Old World Hantavirus’.
Each Hantavirus type is of specific rodent host species. One thing to keep in mind is that not all types of mice or rats carry hantavirus. only a few species like the deer mouse, white-tailed mouse, cotton rat, and rice rat are known to carry Hantavirus. The Hantavirus which caused Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in the Americas was the Sin Nombre virus and was spread by deer mouse.
A person can get HPS if he/she breathes in a Hantavirus that is present in the air through rodent urine and droppings. People are also susceptible to catching the virus if they come in contact with rat urine or droppings and then touch their eyes, nose and/or mouth. Though less frequent but there is also a chance of a person getting infected by Hantavirus if he/she got bitten by an infected person. So far no treatment for Hantavirus has been found other than the medicare and ICU. So as soon as the infected person reaches the hospital, more is the chance of getting recovered. Though this disease is not very common the fatality rate is very high. As there is no treatment available so far, so it is better to stay away from the causes of Hantavirus. Because, as we have heard from the very childhood that:
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
