The Gas leak took place at around 3 am at the LG Polymers industry located in the RR Venkatapuram village, Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on the 7th of May of 2020.

According to reports, about 5000(thousand) people have been affected by the gas and have fallen sick.

11 people, 2 senior citizens, and an 8-year old girl have lost their lives due to the gas as for now, as the reports suggest.

The plant uses Styrene as its raw material which releases highly poisonous gases when burnt.

Exposure to Styrene leads in affecting the Central Nervous System of a person, which causes headaches, weakness, fatigue, and may even lead to depression.

Styrene is primarily used for the production of polystyrene plastics and resins.

The LG Polymers industry was established in 1961 for manufacturing Polystyrene with its copolymers. Earlier it was known as ‘Hindustan Polymers’ until it was taken over by LG Chem(South Korea) in July of 1997 that it was renamed to LG Polymers India Pvt. Limited.


According to reports, people of the village affected by the gas fell unconscious during their sleep. The report also suggests that people started to feel the growth of writs on their faces.

The Andhra Pradesh Govt. has declared 1 Crore rupees to each of the families, whose members have died due to the tragedy.
